Every Hero Points to the Same One

Faith. Redemption. Standing up for what is right. These are the themes of Zephaniah's Hero — and they are also the themes of the whole Bible. Because the prophet Zephaniah, like every prophet before and after him, was not ultimately pointing to himself. He was pointing to a Hero far greater than any human being could ever be.

Zephaniah's Hero is the first book in the God's Daring Dozen series from Christian Focus Publications — a pioneering, beautifully illustrated journey through all twelve Minor Prophets in storybook form for children aged 4–10. Written by Dr. Brian J. Wright and Pastor John Robert Brown, and brought to vivid life by the diverse and vibrant illustrations of Lisa Flanagan, this is the book that opens the door to one of the most overlooked and richest corners of the entire Bible.

Who Was Zephaniah — and Why Does He Matter?

Zephaniah was a prophet who ministered during the reign of King Josiah — one of the last godly kings of Judah — at a time when God's people had wandered badly from him. The nation was full of idolatry, injustice, and indifference to God. Zephaniah's message was bold and urgent: the Day of the Lord is coming. God will judge sin. No one and nothing will escape his righteous reckoning.

But Zephaniah's message does not end in darkness. It ends in one of the most breathtaking passages of hope in the entire Old Testament — a vision of God himself rejoicing over his restored people with singing, removing their shame, and gathering his scattered children home.

This is a God who judges — and a God who saves. A God who will not ignore sin — and a God who will not abandon his people. A Hero worth knowing and trusting with everything.

The Day of the Lord — Made Accessible for Children

The concept of the Day of the Lord is one of the most important and recurring themes in the Old Testament prophets — and one of the most misunderstood. Wright and Brown introduce it to children with care, clarity, and pastoral sensitivity. They help young readers understand that God's judgement is not something arbitrary or cruel — it is the expression of a holy God who takes sin seriously and who will one day put everything right.

And they connect that judgement to the gospel: the Day of the Lord arrived early for Jesus on the cross, where he took the judgement his people deserved. The Hero of Zephaniah's prophecy is the same Hero who died and rose again — and who is coming back to complete the restoration that Zephaniah glimpsed from afar.

A First Step Into the Minor Prophets

As Book 1 in the God's Daring Dozen series, Zephaniah's Hero is the ideal starting point for families and churches wanting to introduce children to the Minor Prophets. It sets the tone for the whole series — establishing the pattern of reading each prophet within the flow of the biblical story, looking for the connections to the gospel, and meeting the God who speaks through every voice and in every age.

Reading this book together as a family or working through it in Sunday school does not just help children know about Zephaniah. It gives them a framework for reading the whole Old Testament with eyes open to the Hero every prophet is pointing toward.
