When Sinners Say "I Do"

Every Person Who Has Ever Said "I Do" Brought Their Sin With Them. Here Is the Good News.

Nobody arrives at the altar empty-handed. Every bride and every groom walks down that aisle carrying luggage — sometimes surprisingly large luggage. Luggage packed with selfishness, pride, insecurity, anger, fear, and a thousand smaller habits and patterns that sin has woven into the fabric of who they are. Sometimes it gets opened right there on the honeymoon. Sometimes it waits until the week after. But it always gets opened.

And that is where the gospel comes in.

When Sinners Say "I Do" is a book about encountering the life-transforming power of the gospel in the unpredictable, sometimes hilarious, sometimes heartbreaking journey of marriage. Dave Harvey writes with the warmth, honesty, and occasional humour of a pastor who has sat with many married couples and knows exactly what sin looks like when it shows up in a marriage — and who knows, just as well, what the gospel looks like when it is allowed to do its work.

This is not a book of marriage techniques or communication strategies. It is a book about sin and grace — about understanding how sin operates in a marriage, and about the breathtaking difference it makes when two sinners bring the gospel to bear on their life together. It will make you see more clearly the glorious picture of what God does when sinners say I do.

What This Book Covers

Dave Harvey works through the influence of sin in marriage and the transforming power of the gospel with honesty, warmth, and biblical depth:

• The luggage we bring — An honest, sometimes humorous account of how sin shows up in marriage — and why understanding its influence makes all the difference
• What sin does to a marriage — How pride, selfishness, anger, and a hundred smaller sins shape the patterns and dynamics of a marriage — often in ways we do not even recognise
• The gospel as the foundation — Why the gospel is not just the starting point of the Christian life but the daily power source for a healthy, growing marriage
• Seeing your spouse clearly — How the gospel changes the way we see our spouse — not as someone who exists to meet our needs but as a fellow sinner whom God is sanctifying
• Conflict and the gospel — How to handle conflict in marriage in a way that is honest, humble, and gospel-shaped — moving toward each other rather than away
• Forgiveness in marriage — What genuine, gospel-rooted forgiveness looks like in a marriage — and why it is both more demanding and more liberating than we might expect
• The glorious picture — The wonderful, counter-cultural vision of what marriage can be when two sinners live together under the grace of the gospel

What Readers Will Learn

• Why understanding sin's influence in marriage is not depressing but liberating — and why the gospel makes all the difference
• How pride, selfishness, and other sins operate in the specific context of marriage — often in subtle and unrecognised ways
• Why the gospel is not just relevant to marriage but is its daily power source — the grace that makes genuine love, forgiveness, and growth possible
• How to see their spouse — and themselves — through the lens of the gospel rather than through the lens of unmet expectations and accumulated grievances
• What gospel-shaped conflict resolution looks like in a marriage — honest, humble, and moving toward rather than away from one another
• What genuine forgiveness looks like between spouses — rooted in the forgiveness they have received from God in Christ
• What God is doing in and through the marriage of two sinners — and why that picture is far more glorious than any version of marriage that leaves out sin and grace
